This past week the Supreme Court started hearing arguments in the Fisher vs University of Texas case. The case surrounds the controversial topic off affirmative action.

A little background on this topic, the Supreme Court heard a case (Grutter v. Bolinger) in 2003 regarding affirmative action. The case was about the admissions policies at the University of Michigan Law School. However, when Sandra Day O’Connor retired in 2006 and Justice Samuel Alito was appointed in her place the Supreme Court is believed to have become more conservative.

For this week do some research on affirmative action and consider the following questions:

1. What is your stance on affirmative action and why?

2. How do you think this could impact the numbers of Latinos in higher education in the future? Keep in mind that this could impact a lot of scholarships available that are race specific.
