First and foremost, why would Ann Coulter say such things at table which more than one Latino immigrant or descendent is sitting? I find her comments disrespectful and ignorant. Just because Hispanics and Latinos are a bigger contribution to the population of the United States, does not mean that other groups and their fight for rights has discontinued. The issue is that now it’s the Latinos’ turn to earn and demand their rights in this country. The African Americans and Native Americans fought for their rights, just fifty years ago. Their era to revolt and demand justice was a historical one, one that should not be forgotten. Those groups of people have gained equality. How many segregated water fountains do you see nowadays? The times have changed and so has this country. Today, the current group whose time has come to demand freedom to live without the fear of being deported or fired because of being undocumented, are the Latinos.
According to Dictionary.com, the word civil means: of citizens in their ordinary capacity, or of the ordinary life and affairs of citizens, as distinguished from military and ecclesiastical life and affairs or of the citizen as an individual. The key words in those definitions are individual, citizen, and ordinary capacity. No where in the definition of civil is there any mentioning of black, white, immigrant, gay, or lesbian. Civil Rights are for individuals no matter their race, color, sexual preference, or their country of origin. Civil Rights in the past have been directed towards African Americans because of the large movement to gain freedom. The Civil War was fought within the United States to grant freedom to slaves. And today, Civil Rights are being fought for by Hispanics because although many do not admit it, there is a large prejudice against those without papers, or do not speak English.
This country was founded off of immigrants. The colonists were immigrants from all around Europe; the baby boomers were also immigrants. The port of New York was a hot spot for European immigration; the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French. Why should it be any different today’s immigrants are immigrating to an already powerful country? What difference does it make that they are coming from the Texas- Mexico border, or the shores of south Florida? All Americans are descendants of immigrants and therefore have no right in saying that immigrants should not be allowed in this country. That may be a strong statement but it is a truth not all like to confront, especially those like Ann Coulter.
