Gloria Estefan: Cubana-Americana

Gloria Estefan is one of the biggest known Latinas in the United States. She was originally born in Havana, Cuba. Her father was part of the military and s a bodyguard for then Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Her family located to Miami, FL before the Cuban revolutionary. During her adolescence she met her now husband Emilio Estefan while he was in the group the Miami Sound Machine. Gloria later admitted that Emilio was her first and only boyfriend.
Gloria is one of the most successful Latina artists in the United States and the entire world. She started off primarily singing in English but later embraced more of her Latin roots in the early 1990s. Gloria Estefan today is not only a very successful business woman alongside her husband but also a humanitarian herself. She has a campaign titled It Gets Better in which she helps oppose homophobic bullying and provides support to those who have been victimized by it. She and her husband also did a Spanish translation of Michael Jackson’s “We Are the World” where all the proceeds from this song were donated to help aid Haiti in its aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake. She also is owner of several Cuban restaurants in the Miami area and Mexico. Alongside her albums and Cuban restaurant chain she is also part owner of the Miami Dolphins and has a very successful chain of hotels in the Miami area. Her most notable achievement would be her appointment to the board of directors of Univision Communications Inc. where the network is one of the largest Hispanic networks in the United States. All of her successes help promote Latino accomplishment in the United States as well as spreading a little bit of Katin culture thought the country as well through her restaurants, hotels, and helping Univision promote Hispanic programming.
Luckily since she is so well known it was not very difficult to find information on her and her successes.
